Wine, World Heritage caves, crater lakes and surf beaches - the Limestone Coast offers an unusual amount of variety, and three days is just enough to taste it.
Day one: Coonawarra and Penola
Start with the wine. Spend the day along the terra rossa strip, tasting Cabernet from the founding families and modern benchmark makers, with lunch among the vines. Finish in Penola, walking the heritage streets tied to Mary MacKillop, Australia's first saint.
Day two: Mount Gambier
Move to Mount Gambier and its volcanic oddities - the cobalt Blue Lake, the sunken Umpherston garden, water-filled caves and the cone of Mount Schank. Leave time to swim in the clear spring water at Ewens Ponds.
Day three: caves and coast
Head inland to the World Heritage fossil chambers at Naracoorte, then west to the coast at Robe, Beachport and the wild dunes of Canunda. It is a lot of ground, but the distances are short and the variety is the whole point.
Make it your own
Stretch any one of these days into two and the region only improves. The Limestone Coast rewards those who slow down.
