A town built on reclaimed land
Millicent is the hub of the Wattle Range, laid out in 1870 on the limestone ridge that rises from the old Millicent flats - country reclaimed when settlers drained the shallow inland waters and swamplands that once covered it. It is named after Millicent Glen, daughter of Adelaide's first Anglican bishop and wife of an early pioneer, and grew into one of the Limestone Coast's main service towns. It keeps a strong rural and forestry character, shaped by the surrounding farms, pine plantations and a long-standing paper and pulp industry.

The Tantanoola Tiger is a famous local legend from the late 1800s, when an animal blamed for attacking livestock around Tantanoola was hunted as an escaped tiger. The creature was eventually shot in 1895 and identified as a wolf, and the mounted specimen is still displayed at the Tiger Hotel in Tantanoola, a short drive from Millicent.
