Cape Northumberland
South Australia's southernmost point, a windswept cape near Port MacDonnell with a lighthouse, blowholes and a little penguin colony.
The southern edge
Cape Northumberland, just west of Port MacDonnell, marks the southernmost point of mainland South Australia. The rugged limestone headland has carried a lighthouse since 1859 — the current tower replaced an earlier one undermined by the sea — guiding ships past a coast notorious for wrecks.
A coastal walking trail leads past blowholes, rock pools and lookouts over the Southern Ocean. The cape is also home to a little penguin colony, and interpretive signs tell the story of the many vessels lost along this exposed shore.
