John Riddoch Interpretive Centre
Penola's visitor and interpretive centre, telling the linked stories of the town, the Riddoch family and Coonawarra wine.
Named for John Riddoch, the Scottish pastoralist who founded both the town's fortunes and the Coonawarra wine district, this centre is the natural first stop for visitors to Penola. It combines a visitor information service with engaging displays on local history.
Exhibits trace the establishment of the Coonawarra Fruit Colony in the 1890s, the rise of the terra rossa vineyards, and the heritage of the Penola district from pioneer days. It is a useful primer before exploring the cellar doors a few minutes up the road.
Staff can point you to the Mary MacKillop sites, the heritage walks and the best of the surrounding wine country, making it the hub of any Penola visit.
