Petticoat Lane Heritage Walk
Penola's oldest street, a lane of restored timber and stone cottages telling the story of the town's founding families.
Petticoat Lane is the historic heart of Penola, a narrow street lined with the town's earliest cottages, some dating to the 1850s. Lovingly restored, the slab-timber and stone dwellings now house galleries, craft studios and quiet residences.
A gentle self-guided walk takes you past Sharam's Cottage, said to be the first house built in Penola, and a string of other heritage buildings shaded by mature trees. Interpretive plaques recount the lives of the pioneer families and the early days of the settlement.
The lane connects naturally to the Mary MacKillop heritage precinct nearby, making it part of an easy half-day exploring the historic streets where Australia's first saint once taught.
