Mount Gambier's old rail yards reborn as gardens, wetlands and play spaces in the heart of the city, linked to a flat rail trail running east-west.
The city's new green heart
When the trains stopped running, Mount Gambier's railway corridor sat derelict in the middle of town — until the land was gifted back to the community and reimagined as the Railway Lands: lawns, native gardens, ponds and wetlands, sculptures, and some of the best play spaces in the city, arranged around the old station precinct.
Children get a 'learn to ride' mini streetscape, climbing structures and water-side boardwalks; adults get level paths, picnic spots and coffee a block from Commercial Street. Sections of original rail have been worked into the landscaping as a reminder of what the place was.
From the Railway Lands, the flat Rail Trail follows the old corridor east and west across the city — an easy walk or ride of several kilometres. The park sits only a short stroll from the Cave Garden sinkhole and the Riddoch Arts & Cultural Centre, making it simple to string together a half-day of the city's free attractions.
