Wonambi Fossil Centre

A life-sized reconstruction of Naracoorte's ice-age megafauna, bringing the World Heritage fossil record to life.

Part of the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area, the Wonambi Fossil Centre recreates the swampy, fern-filled landscape that surrounded the caves around 200,000 years ago. Animatronic and sculpted models bring back the giant marsupials whose bones were trapped and preserved in the cave sediments.

Wander among a towering Diprotodon, the marsupial lion Thylacoleo, giant kangaroos and the snake Wonambi for which the centre is named. Interpretive displays explain how the fossil deposits formed and why Naracoorte is one of the world's richest ice-age sites.

It is the perfect companion to the cave tours themselves, giving flesh and fur to the bones visitors see entombed in the limestone.
