Between Coonawarra and Naracoorte lies Wrattonbully, a limestone-ridge wine district quietly earning a reputation for bold, structured reds.
In the neighbour's shadow
For years Wrattonbully was the wine district few outside the trade could name, even as its fruit found its way into bottles from across the country. Sitting on the limestone ridge between famous Coonawarra and the caves of Naracoorte, it grew up a little in the shadow of its celebrated neighbour.
What the ridge gives
Wrattonbully is a touch warmer and more elevated than Coonawarra, with red soils over the same deep limestone. The result is cabernet and shiraz with generosity and structure, fruit that has long been prized by winemakers looking for power and length.
Coming into its own
Now the district is increasingly bottling under its own name, and travellers are catching on. A detour off the Riddoch Highway, easily paired with a day at the Naracoorte Caves, reveals a wine country with its own character and a confident future.
