Lake George (Beachport)

A large coastal lagoon beside Beachport, rich in birdlife and prized by local fishers.

Lake George is a broad, shallow coastal lagoon stretching behind the dunes near Beachport, separated from the sea by a narrow barrier. Its waters and surrounding samphire flats support large numbers of waterbirds, from pelicans and swans to migratory waders.

The lake is a popular spot for fishing, particularly for mullet and mulloway, and its calm edges draw kayakers and birdwatchers. A drive around its margins reveals constantly shifting water levels and a big, open coastal-plain landscape.

For naturalists it is one of the region's significant wetlands, and for anglers a quietly productive corner of the Beachport hinterland.
