Walking & Hiking
Crater rims, cave reserves & coastal tracks
The best walking & hiking in Limestone Coast
Walk the rim of an extinct volcano, follow boardwalks through fossil-rich wetlands or trace wild coastline through conservation parks. The Limestone Coast's volcanic and karst landscapes make for unforgettable walking.
The Limestone Coast packs an extraordinary variety of walks into one corner of South Australia, from volcanic crater rims to coastal heathland and ancient cave country. In Mount Gambier, the sealed 3.6km circuit around the Blue Lake and the climb to Centenary Tower on Valley Lake reward walkers with sweeping volcanic views.
Further afield, Naracoorte Caves National Park threads surface trails between World Heritage fossil caves, while Little Dip Conservation Park near Robe winds through dunes, lakes and clifftops. Birdwatchers head for the boardwalks of Bool Lagoon, one of the state's most important wetlands.
Many trails are short, flat and family-friendly, making them easy to combine with cellar doors or beach time in a single day. Cooler months bring the most comfortable walking, though shaded crater and cave tracks stay pleasant through the warmer season too.
