Hells Hole
A deep, flooded sinkhole hidden in pine forest near Mount Gambier, a well-known cave diving site.
A sinkhole in the forest
Hells Hole is a flooded limestone sinkhole set within the pine plantations north-east of Mount Gambier. Reached by forest tracks, it opens suddenly as a dark, clear pool dropping into the aquifer, and is a long-established site for cave and technical divers exploring the region's underwater systems.
Access is via permit through the forest managers, and the site is suited to experienced, certified cave divers rather than casual visitors. It forms part of the remarkable concentration of sinkholes that ring the Mount Gambier volcanic plain.
