Robe Obelisk

The candy-striped landmark

Robe's iconic red-and-white striped obelisk, built in 1855 as a navigation marker on the cliffs of Cape Dombey.

Robe's most photographed sight

Standing on the rugged cliffs of Cape Dombey, the red-and-white striped Obelisk was built in 1855 to guide ships into Guichen Bay and to store rocket-rescue equipment for the many vessels wrecked along this coast. Erosion has steadily undercut the headland, and the much-loved landmark is now expected to topple into the sea within years — making it one of Robe's must-see sights while it still stands.
