A beloved holiday town with a colonial port history, heritage main street, fresh crayfish and easy access to drive-on beaches.
A port turned playground
Robe was proclaimed in 1847 and grew into one of South Australia's busiest ports, famously landing more than 16,000 Chinese gold-seekers in the 1850s who then walked overland to the Victorian goldfields to avoid a landing tax. That history lingers in the town's heritage buildings and obelisk, while today Robe is best loved as a relaxed summer escape — all fresh lobster, gelato, beachfront pubs and long sandy beaches.
