The Old Mount Gambier Gaol
A bluestone colonial gaol from 1866, now open for tours and atmospheric overnight stays inside the old cells.
Operating as a prison from 1866 right through to 1995, the Old Mount Gambier Gaol is one of the most intact colonial gaols in regional South Australia. Its high bluestone walls and iron gates dominate a corner of the city, a stern reminder of frontier justice.
Today the complex offers guided history tours that walk you through the cell blocks, the exercise yards and the gallows room, with stories of the inmates and keepers who passed through. For the brave, several cells have been converted to budget accommodation behind the original locked doors.
The gaol is a cornerstone of Mount Gambier's heritage trail and a popular stop for those drawn to the darker corners of the region's past.
